Strong Growth in Emerging Exporters at the 2009 Export Awards

The Honourable Gerry Brownlee, Minister of Economic Development provided the opening commentary at this year’s Air New Zealand Cargo Canterbury Export Awards held last night at the Christchurch Convention Centre.

“An extremely high calibre of finalists were in the running this year which also saw a significant increase in the number of entries in the “emerging exporter” category. New Zealand relies on around 13,000 businesses for its total exports with 625 companies being responsible for 91% of our merchandise exports,” said Peter Townsend, Chief Executive of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. “In order to grow the New Zealand economy, we must grow our existing export base through increased activity of existing exporters and supporting and encouraging new exporters. Canterbury is well placed on both fronts,” said Peter Townsend.

“Canterbury’s exporting community includes some of the countries leading hi-tech innovators, with proven ability to secure niche market opportunities” says David Ferguson, President of Export New Zealand Canterbury Region. “At the same time it’s important to recognise that the majority of our exports come from more traditional sectors. As well as continuing to lead the world in quality and production efficiency, exporters from these sectors are also showing exceptional growth through innovation in areas such as distribution and international partnerships”.

“This year’s award winners have demonstrated extraordinary talent, hard work and the ability to perform, regardless of market conditions. A common factor has been their commitment to strong customer relationships, and understanding their customer’s needs” adds David Ferguson.

A contribution to exporting award was also given to Tait Radio Communications last night recognising the outstanding contribution the company has made to exporting in Canterbury and New Zealand over the last 40 years.

Export New Zealand Canterbury is a subsidiary of the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.
